School Safety Forum hosted by Yuma Police Department

LEA LA CARTA EN ESPAÑOL

JOINT MESSAGE FROM CRANE SCHOOLS, YUMA DISTRICT ONE, YUMA UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT, STEDY, GADSDEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT, SOMERTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT, DESERT VIEW SCHOOLS, AND THE YUMA POLICE DEPARTMENT

September 18, 2024

These past few days have been challenging for the families of our communities. All of our school districts have been adversely impacted by the continuous circulation of reported threats to our schools. We share your concerns and are committed to providing safe and supportive learning environments for our students. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority and we take all threats very seriously.  We continue to work closely with law enforcement to investigate each threat and we are grateful for their ongoing dedication to keeping our schools and community safe.

It is of the utmost importance for us to rally together as school districts and community members to address this issue, minimize educational disruptions, and maintain safe, supportive campuses. At the school level, we count on the support of emergency preparedness and response plans, regular fire and lockdown drills, safety systems, and collaboration with our local law enforcement agencies.

Please partner with us and have a conversation with your children about the responsible use of social media and phone usage. Rather than sharing and reposting threats, which can lead to misinformation that can be damaging to other students, families, and the community, we ask that our students make wise decisions and report any threat to a trusted adult. Immediately reporting threatening behavior against any student, individual, or campus can help us all keep our community safe. If a student sees something, they should say something. We appreciate every single report and tip provided by students and their families. Please continue to report to the appropriate channels.

Again, all threats are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly.  Students who make threats are disciplined by the schools, and in some cases, have received recommendations to be criminally charged by the police department. Additionally, interfering or disrupting learning at an educational institution is a crime and carries felony charges. There are real consequences for originating/posting threats.
